NITEK
Nitek, based out of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, is primarily a CCTV manufacturer who has recently made a foray into the arena of IP cameras as well. Founded around 25 years ago in the United States, the company now has a European headquarters in the Netherlands in addition to their main office in Rolling Meadows. Nitek’s biggest move since its inception is a patent, which they obtained roughly six years ago. This patent is for a technology that allows power, data and video to transmit via UTP or unshielded twisted pair, a type of wire previously used mainly for data. Nitek also develops IP technologies with similar applications as their CCTV networks.
There have been reports that Nitek plans to roll out a complete line of transmission products designed specifically for Fiber Optic Networks in the future, including some products not previously available in the United States.
Currently, Nitek provides other innovative solutions such as their “Etherstretch” system. Etherstretch employs Ethernet over coax technology to extend IPCCTV and PoE networks, allowing implementation in situations and areas where it was previously outside the realm of possibility.
Another advantage of Etherstretch is the ability to provide power to IP cameras over coaxial cable. Available in single and multi-channel versions this technology is capable of extending power and data transmission capabilities up to 500 meters. This is accomplished through a combination of Nitek’s EL1500CW camera and a networked receiver. The receiver provides power to the Camera using PoE technology when the receiver is connected to a PoE switch.
Nitek also provides inserters like the IP1054 that provide PoE to the receiver in cases where the network switch is not PoE compatible. This particular solution comes in especially handy when updating existing networks currently using analog cameras transmitting over coax. In this case, there is no need to run new cable or reconfigure the entire network. The EL-1500CW outdoor IP camera is set in a durable housing and can connect to the same RG59U coaxial cable as the analog camera it replaces.
The multi-channel version of the Etherstretch technology is perhaps Nitek’s most impressive offering. Using existing cabling, the ER8500C and ER16500C provide power and transmission capability to eight or sixteen ET1500C transmitters respectively with no setup required. Everything works in plug and play fashion. In the case of the ER16500C, the internal power supply provides power to all the connected network devices independent of additional PoE functionality.
